World Overshoot Day #MoveTheDate (Sustainability)

I hope Mother Earth will still be like this even after a thousand years...

Browsing the Internet, I had a glimpse of the phrase, "World Overshoot Day." Now the curious cat in me wandered and googled away. And tada! I found out that it is actually something that everyone should be aware of.

World Overshoot Day is a day the earth resources, which is good for one year, were already consumed by everyone. It means that the earth has not yet recuperate itself from all the resources that we have used and yet we still need additional resources and so we borrow from next year's supply. In due time, there will be no more resources left so we have to find another world (sounds like the sci-fi movies). If I use an analogy, it is like I'm borrowing from the bank because I already spent all the money I had for the year and I will continue and continue to borrow until the bank will not lend me anymore because there is no more money left of the bank so I need to find another bank. That is how I understood it.

How beautiful the earth is...

When I was attending the Graduate School before in the Philippines, one of my courses tackled about Sustainable Living and how it is important that students and other people should be aware of that. The awareness of such matter has been increasing and I think the media should also help. We are living in Social Media times and I think by simply sharing stuff like this and putting hashtags about Sustainable Living and posting it in FB, Instagram and Twitter, people will be aware and help in this advocacy.

Nowadays, most grocery stores and businesses are pledging to use materials that can be used for composting. Single use plastic bags are not encourage anymore by grocery stores like Pak 'N Save, New World and Countdown. Reusable bags are being given as incentive or is being sold for just a dollar. Moreover, stores also offer discounts if you brought your own reusable bags.

I, myself, pledge to prevent using Styrofoams and single-use plastic merchandise. I know that I am not perfect and at times I use them. But I promise myself that I will keep on trying because I want my future generation to still live life like I am experiencing now.

Some people I know are pledging not to buy new things unless they really need it. They go first to Hospice or shops that sell hand-me-downs. Most of things that we throw away ended up in dump sites and landfills. This is their way to contribute in lessening the rubbish we have.

Trying to keep my pledge!!!

I think everyone should participate about this advocacy because we will not know how long we can borrow from Mother Earth. She is always giving and we are always taking. It's time we also give her something in return!!!
